The Cultural Chronicles Article

A single-page article design for The Cultural Chronicles, a magazine committed to educating and engaging a younger audience in cultural history. This article by Tala Riverwind was dedicated to Native American culture in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

My goal was to create a culturally responsible design for the article that reflects Native American Culture and visually engages a younger audience, ages 12-18. The audience’s age range heavily influenced the energetic and modern feel of the design. Native American culture is incorporated in the design through the imagery and typography. The typeface Phoreus Cherokee by Mark Jamra was the first typeface that supports the Cherokee syllabary to contain italic fonts, expanding inclusion within digital typography. Additionally, it was designed to be easy to read for young readers, which not only supports the preservation of the language but also connects to the magazine’s intended audience.

A Walk Around the Moon Book Jacket

A book jacket cover for a children’s fanfiction book based on Over the Moon, written by Audrey Wells and directed by Glen Keane. The book is about a character named Gobi, a glow-in-the-dark pangolin-like creature, after he is exiled from his kingdom for trying to help the moon goddess deal with her grief. The story follows his journey in exile as he learns to navigate conflict and loneliness while holding onto the hope of returning home.

My goal was to create a book jacket to attract the attention of young readers, children aged 5 and up, while conveying themes of adventure, space, and heartwarming stories. This was achieved through creating visual interest within the scale and bright color palette. The typography was thoughtfully chosen, with young readers in mind, to ensure clarity and ease of reading.

Museum Catalog for exhibition Portraitry and Flora Fusion

A catalog to showcase the exhibition Portraitry and Flora Fusion by Colette D. The catalog features information about the artist and exhibition, along with the featured artworks and descriptions for each.

My goal was to create a visually interesting and cohesive catalog that would engage viewers in the content and encourage them to visit the exhibit. To achieve the visual interest, I focused on creating energetic and rhythmic spreads that guide the readers throughout the catalog. To ensure a visual focus on the artwork, I used a lot of white space. The calm and clean layout reflects the audience’s expectations of the museum.
